Sonny Rollins - On the Road, On Video

Wednesday December 3, 2008
I've just posted my review of Sonny Rollins' October 28th, 2008 release, Road Shows, Vol. 1. The CD features live tracks, chosen by Rollins himself, recorded during some of his numerous tours since 1980.

Also, check out the latest video on the Jazz Video Guy Blog. "Sonny Rollins is a Work in Progress" is a behind-the-scenes look at the saxophone legend, showing performance footage, Rollins discussing a few of his acquaintances (Thelonious Monk, Clifford Brown, and John Coltrane), and a conversation between Rollins and drummer Roy Haynes as they try to recall their earliest recording with each other (it was either in 1948 or 1949).

Jazz Video Guy, also known as Brett Primack, has an assortment of videos on his blog, featuring Joe Lovano, Billy Taylor, Winard Harper, and others.

Bret’s series is great. He’s a true pioneer of jazz video.

I host an online jazz video series, Jazz it Up!, that I think your readers might be interested in, Jacob. We released 10 episodes online for Season 1, and garnered 1 million viewers online. Now we’re available on Tivo’s Video on Demand service (4 million subscribers) and to owners of an Apple iPhone (over 8 million).

Jazz it Up! was also nominated for a Global Media Award (GMA) in the Outstanding Long Form – Entertainment category. The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the Consumer Electronics Association partnered to recognize innovative non-broadcast content.

Thanks,

Greg Thomas
