By April 14, 2009

Icons Among Us: Jazz in the Present Tense is a 4-part documentary that examines modern jazz as an active, evolving art form instead of merely a far-removed extension of jazz' rich history. The film, which features interviews and performance clips of contemporary stars including Nicholas Payton, Brian Blade (pictured, along with bassist Chris Thomas), Jason Moran, and The Bad Plus, touches on a potent argument circulating in the jazz community.

The film premieres at Lincoln Center on Wednesday, April 15th, accompanied by a set of live jazz performed by Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band. Click here for tickets. Beginning on April 20th, the Documentary Channel will show each of the four parts of the film on four consecutive Mondays at 9:00 pm ET/PT.

Be sure to check out my interview executive producer John Comerford, in which he discusses the film, and just why the issue of the "jazz" label is so sensitive in contemporary jazz circles.
