No JVC Jazz Festival New York in 2009
Tuesday April 28, 2009
There will be no JVC Jazz Festival in New York this year. JVC, the Japanese electronics company has pulled its sponsorship of jazz events, citing the weakened economy as the reason for its decision. The withdrawal marks the end of a relationship with impresario George Wein (pictured) that began in 1984. Last year's JVC Jazz Festival New York was spread over two weeks, and featured 40 acts in multiple venues across the city.
Wein has decided to produce concerts on his own. Featuring singers Jamie Cullum and Diana Krall, the performances will take place at Carnegie Hall in late June. Wein is also producing this year's Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals under his own name.
