Traditional jazz may be struggling to attract new audiences, but the New Languages Festival 2009 will provide a glimpse of the vitality of improvised music that lies on the fringe of jazz. The festival, which takes place in Brooklyn's McCarren Hall from September 17th through the 26th, will feature acts such as the Pete Robbins, Tyshawn Sorey, Mario Pavone trio (pictured), Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, the punk/free jazz group Little Women, and saxophonist Tim Berne's new group Los Totopos.

The music presented will be of the sort that melds numerous influences, explores unconventional forms and foundations of improvisation, and attracts a buzzing scene of young and eager listeners.

Check this site in the coming weeks for reviews and highlights from the festival.
