Thursday, October 8th will be great. Basically, it will be awesome (sorry, there's a stupid pun in there...). That's because two great bassists are performing and I am catching one after the other. First, Joe Martin (who plays with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Anat Cohen, and basically [sorry!] anybody who's anybody), will perform at the Jazz Standard.
His CD, Not By Chance came out on September 15th on Anzic Records. The album contains mostly Martin's compositions, performed by some of the heaviest heavy-weights in jazz today: pianist Brad Mehldau, saxophonist Chris Potter, and drummer Marcus Gilmore. At Thursday's show, the colossal Mark Turner will perform in Potter's stead.
After Joe Martin's 7:30 pm set, I'm heading to the Jazz Gallery to see the fierce up-and-coming Linda Oh tear it up with her trio. (See more at Double Bass #2).
