Saxophonist Coleman Hawkins helped legitimize the tenor saxophone as a jazz instrument, proving it was not merely a marching band instrument, but that it was capable of artful expression. Although Hawkins was an icon of the swing era, his pursuit of a unique approach to improvisation, while balancing lyricism with harmonic sophistication, inspired the bebop musicians of the 1940s and 50s.
