Of course jazz fans know about bassist/vocalist Esperanza Spalding, who was given a teaching job at Berklee College of Music at age 20, the year she graduated from the very same school (although she didn't spend much time in class because she was too busy touring with Patti Austin and Joe Lovano).
But for anybody who doesn't have an ear to the ground of the jazz world, she's just the mysterious 26-year-old with the temerity to have stolen Justin Bieber's Best New Artist Grammy at the February 13th, 2011 Grammy Award ceremony. Read this profile to find out who Esperanza Spalding is, aside from the only jazz musician to ever win a Grammy in the Best New Artist category.
