Westchester County, New York, perhaps the mother of all suburbia, is not usually considered during discussions about the New York jazz scene. However, the swath of land extending north of the Bronx is home to many top-tier jazz musicians, and the Westchester Jazz Orchestra formed in 2003 to showcase the talents of its residents.
This year, the big band releases Maiden Voyage Suite, an album inspired by Herbie Hancock's 1965 album Maiden Voyage (Blue Note). The WJO's record features all of the songs on the original album, arranged by members of the Orchestra and its artistic director, Mike Holober.
