Douglas Detrick reviews Mischief & Mayhem, the quartet led by violinist Jenny Scheinman, featuring masters of cross-genre improvisation Todd Sickafoose on bass, violinist Nels Cline, and drummer Jim Black. The performance featured compositions by each of the members, who lead their own bands. Mischief & Mayhem managed to mold each composition into its own distinctive sound, no matter what sort of ensemble the pieces were originally written for.
For sale during the band's Village Vanguard run was a limited edition of Jenny Scheinman Presents Mischief & Mayhem, the recording that will be officially released sometime in 2012.
