Julian "Cannonball" Adderley was once a high school band teacher in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. After convincing Oscar Pettiford to let him sit on a set at the Café Bohemia in New York City, he became an immediate sensation, and was shortly thereafter invited to play in Miles Davis' sextet.
