Definition: the structure of a jazz song. The form is the sum of the rhythmic and harmonic content in a tune, and is usually includes at least two contrasting sections that are repeated.

Common types of forms (capital letters refer to sections):

  • 12-Bar Blues
  • AABA
  • ABAC
  • 16-Bar Form
Examples:
The song "On Green Dolphin Street" has an ABAC form.
