Definition: the composed part of the jazz performance. The head contains the melody and the chord changes of a piece, and in most cases, the soloist improvises while adhering to the structure of the head.

- Head Out (noun): the statement of the composed material after solos.
Also Known As: the tune. Although sometimes "the tune" refers to the entire performance, including the head, solos, and any other material.
