Three More Extraordinary Women
- I'd have to add these three (two from my college (music major) days: June Christie; her "Misty Miss Christy" album remains one of my all-time favorites. Two songs stand out: "That's All," and "For all we Know." Julie London had a sultry, smoky voice, and she was "in the zone" with songs like "Cry me a River," and turned "Bye-Bye Blackbird" into a whole new genre of jazz. Finally, while Billie Holiday was an acknowledged Queen of the Blues, Diana Ross did a credible job of taking on her role in "The Lady Sings the Blues." I also find many of the songs in the Supreme's Album, "The Supremes Sing Rodgers & Hardt," to be excellent jazz covers. Another of my all-time favorite songs from college days was "Dancing on the Ceiling," and Diana's version is excellent.

- Nat King Cole is/was one of the finest jazz singers ever. Mark Murphy represents the clearest instruments I have ever heard. Unfortunately, there is a dearth of male jazz singers. Female singers are another thing. Sophie Milman, Nnenna Freelon, Sacha Boutros, Azure McCall, Calabria Foti, Karrin Allyson and Mishka Adams are just a few excellent jazz singers that come to my mind. Cassandra Wilson, Roberta Gambarini, Angela Hagenbach, Kendra Shank and Jacqui Dankworth also thrill me immensely.
